Launch date announced for report on ‘personalised’ healthcare

The Council will launch its report Medical profiling and online medicine: The ethics of 'personalised' health care in a consumer age on 12 October 2010 at a seminar in London.

The report will identify the ethical values that are important when making decisions about interventions relating to a range of medical profiling and online medical services.

Recommendations will address the implications of developments in the following areas:

  • Online health information, including general health information provision sites, disease-specific sites and interactive patient group websites
  • Online personal health records, including those provided by public healthcare systems and those provided by commercial companies
  • Online purchasing of pharmaceuticals, including buying from licensed online pharmacies in the UK and buying pharmaceuticals that are restricted or illegal in the UK, without a prescription
  • Predictive testing, including body imaging and personal genetic profiling for susceptibility to common diseases
  • Telemedicine
