CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION

1 The Chairman welcomed the Working Party and apologised for changing the timetable for the meeting.

2 It was agreed that the fact-finding meetings held in the US on 22 and 23 March had been extremely useful (HRRDC (01) 07). It had been helpful to meet with individuals who expressed a range of views about standards of care.

3 At the Council's recent meeting, the progress of the Working Party had been discussed. It was reported at that meeting that a number of the invitees at the US meeting had suggested that the draft report be put up on the web for comment before a final version was agreed and printed. After some discussion the Council agreed that such a step would be very useful. It was agreed that the report would be placed on the web after being peer reviewed and signed off by the Working Party and Council. Comments received during the month that the report was on the web would either be reproduced on the web-site, or included as an annex to the report.

4 It was agreed that the Working Party would hold an additional meeting in September to sign off the report.

Fourth draft of the report

5 The Secretariat would revise the report in-house over the next two months before circulating a new draft for the Working Party meeting in June. During that time, the report would be edited to remove duplication, and to ensure consistency.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Peer review of the report

6 It was noted that Council had requested that the peer reviewers nominated for the report included women and non-medical professionals. Council had also requested that reviewers with expertise in moral philosophy and medical anthropology be considered.

7 Catherine Peckham thanked the Working Party and closed the meeting.
