CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION

1 The Chairman welcomed the Working Party and thanked Catherine Peckham for hosting the Working Party's dinner the previous evening. The dinner had proven to be a very useful opportunity for the Working Party to discuss the peer review comments and issues such as standards of care, what happens after research is over and the ethical review of research.

2 The peer review comments had been far reaching and substantive and would be very useful in redrafting the report. The Secretariat would begin redrafting the report after the meeting alongside Working Party members who had been working on specific chapters. The Report would not be sent to Council until the Working Party was happy with it. The Inquiry was, however, originally due to publish in June 2001 and it would be useful to have the report on the website at the beginning of November.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING ON 14 June (HRRDC 8th meeting)

3 The minutes of the 8th meeting were approved.

MATTERS ARISING

4 There were no matters arising.

SIXTH DRAFT OF THE REPORT

5 Peer reviewers had asked for more explanation to be included about why the report was being written and who the anticipated audience would be. The introduction to the report would be redrafted accordingly.

6 It was important to look at building the capacity of countries so that they could develop their own research priorities. The World Health Organization assisted with such capacity building in some areas, such as reproductive health.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

7 The Chairman thanked the Working Party and the Secretariat for all their hard work and commitment, noting that this was the final scheduled meeting before the report was published. The Secretariat would undertake initial redrafting and would pass chapters to individual Working Party members. The report would then be passed to Council for consideration. If possible, the Report would be approved by Council and placed on the web for discussion in November, so that it was available during the Global Forum meeting in The Gambia.
