Genetically Modified Crops

Follow-up Paper

The use of genetically modified crops in developing countries

The Council’s Report, Genetically modified crops: ethical and social issues, provoked considerable discussion in 1999. Four years on, the Council decided to produce a follow-up Discussion Paper, focusing specifically on the role of GM crops in developing countries.

The final Discussion Paper was released on 28 December, 2003. To download a copy, please click here.

The draft paper was intended to contribute to 'GM nation?', the public debate on GM organised by the UK government in 2003.

Further information:

  • Terms of Reference
  • A draft Discussion Paper was launched for comment in June. Over 80 responses were received during the period for comment, from 27 countries. One quarter of the responses were from those in developing countries.
