Animal-to-Human Transplants: the Ethics of Xenotransplantation

External Consultation

Public Consultation

A public consultation was launched in April 1995 as part of the inquiry. Over eighty responses were received from a wide range of individuals and organisations including:

  • Universities and research institutes
  • Research councils and learned societies
  • Religious organisations
  • Animal interest groups
  • Commercial interest groups
  • Individuals
  • Sixth-form students

Interestingly, there was no response from patient groups or practising transplant surgeons. Equally the opinions came more from researchers than from practitioners.
However, the results of the consultation served as a guide to the range of views that are held among interested parties and members of the public. The consultation formed an important part of the Working Party’s consideration of the issues.
