The Council hosted the first ‘trilateral’ meeting with the Comité Consultatif National d'Ethique (the national ethics committee for France) and the Nationaler Ethikrat (the national ethics committee for Germany) on 4 June 2007. The three organisations discussed ethical issues raised by biometrics, the role and contribution of ethics advisory bodies, and rationing healthcare resources. Download a note of the meeting

The German Nationaler Ethikrat hosted this year's bilateral meeting with the Council in Berlin. The topics discussed were the ethical issues surrounding neuroscience and those relating to the possible availability of complete personal genome sequencing.

The Council held the first of an annual bi-lateral meeting with the French Comité Consultatif National d'Ethique in Paris in November, on the ethics of public health. Case studies on vaccination and the storage of tissue samples in databanks allowed a comparison between different perspectives in France and the UK.
