New Chairman and appointment of new member

Professor Ian Kennedy was appointed Chairman of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics in succession to Dr Onora O'Neill CBE, FBA on 18 May 1998.

Professor Kennedy is Professor of Health Law Ethics and Policy at University College, London and a founding member of the Nuffield Council. The Reith Lecturer in 1980, Professor Kennedy has written widely on medical law and ethics. His most recent book is Medical Law (1994) (2nd edition) and his most recent essay is The Quality of Mercy: Doctors, Patients and Euthanasia (1998).

He is past Dean of the Law School (1986-96) and President of the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics, Kings College, London, which he founded in 1978. He was Chairman of the Secretary of State for Healths Advisory Group on Xenotransplantation (1995-96).

Professor Kennedy has a long involvement in public service including membership of the General Medical Council, the Medicines Commission, and the Department of Healths Expert Advisory Group on Aids and serves on such bodies as the British Medical Associations Medical Ethics Committee and the Archbishop of Canterburys Advisory Group on Medical Ethics.

The following new member has joined the Nuffield Council on Bioethics:

Professor Albert Weale Professor Weale has been Professor of Government at the University of Essex and co-editor of the British Journal of Political Science since 1992. He is the author of several works on health policy and related topics, and edited Cost and Choice in Health Care (Kings Fund, 1998) and Innovation and Environment Risk (co-edited with Lewis Roberts, Belhaven, 1991). Professor Weale chaired the Nuffield Council on Bioethics Working Party on Animal-to-Human Transplants : the ethics of xenotransplantation which published its report in 1996.
