How is the Council funded?

The Council was entirely funded by the Nuffield Foundation from 1991-1994. Since 1994, the Council has been jointly funded by The Nuffield Foundation, the Medical Research Council and The Wellcome Trust on a five-year rolling system.

These funding bodies do not seek to influence the Council's choice of which topics to examine. The five-year system allows the Council and the Secretariat flexibility to plan future work while maintaining intellectual independence and financial stability. A formalised relationship exists between the Council and its funders. Towards the end of each five-year period, a process of external review is a condition of continued support. Funding for the Council has been confirmed for the period 2007-2012.

Occasionally, the Council also receives funds for specific projects: for example, in 2004 the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the UK Department for International Development and the Rockefeller Foundation provided funding for a Workshop on the ethics of research related to healthcare in developing countries.
