National GM dialogue

The UK Government has announced a national dialogue on genetic modification (GM) issues in 2003. There are three strands to this dialogue:

1. Public Debate

The public debate aims to deepen public understanding and create a dialogue between all strands of opinion before the crucial decisions on GM crops have to be taken.

2. Science Review

A review of the science of GM, led by Professor Sir David King (the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser) working with Professor Howard Dalton (the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), with independent advice from the Food Standards Agency.

3. Strategy Unit Economics Study

The Strategy Unit are carrying out a study into the overall costs and benefits associated with the growing of GM crops, including their effect on conventional and organic farming interests.

Food Standards Agency

The Food Standards Agency is also supporting a range of events and activities to independently assess people's views of genetically modified food. The Agency will focus on gathering the views of people who are not normally heard in public discussions: those on lower incomes and young people.
