CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION

1 The Chairman welcomed the group and outlined the schedule for the day.

MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON 7 MAY 2003 (RECIRCULATED)

2 The minutes of the last meeting were approved, subject to one alteration.

RECOMMENDATIONS

3 The Working Party discussed each of the draft recommendations in the Report and agreed on their final content. The following topics were debated:

- The question of whether pharmacogenetic testing was likely to be required by regulators in the future.
- The application of pharmacogenetics to existing medicines.
- Achieving voluntary consent to take part in pharmacogenetic research.
- The anonymisation of pharmacogenetic samples in research.
- The impact of the Data Protection Act
- The provision of individual feedback to research participants.
- The potential application of pharmacogenetics to withdrawn medicines.
- Issues regarding race and ethnicity in pharmacogenetics.
- The provision of information about pharmacogenetics to health professionals and patients.
- The need for consent in clinical practice.
- Over-the-counter provision of pharmacogenetic tests.
- The use of pharmacogenetic information by insurers.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

4 The Working Party agreed the comments received from the final peer reviewer had been very helpful. Amendments to the Report would need to be received by the Secretariat by Friday 13 June.
