    Mitochondrial donation to prevent the transmission of inherited mitochondrial disorders passes the Senate in Australia

    The Australian Senate have passed a Bill, known as ‘Maeve’s law’, that will make it legal for those at risk of passing on a severe mitochondrial disorder to their offspring to avoid this outcome by the use of assisted reproductive techniques known as ‘mitochondrial donation’.

It was established by the Trustees of the Nuffield Foundation in 1991, and since 1994 it has been funded jointly by the Foundation, Wellcome and the Medical Research Council.
