Following an open and competitive recruitment process, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics (NCOB) is delighted to announce the appointment of two new Council members, Margi Sheth and Constantinos Kanaris who will begin their roles in September.
- Margi Sheth is Head of AI Governance & Enablement at Novo Nordisk, where she works to embed AI ethics into the strategic and commercial fabric of life sciences. She has 17 years of experience across biomedical research, data ethics and responsible innovation in the public and private sectors, and established the pharmaceutical industry’s first data and AI ethics framework in 2020. Her interests include how ethical frameworks can protect the interests of health data subjects while enabling the medical breakthroughs that depend on their data. Earlier in her career, she managed large-scale cancer genomics research at the US National Cancer Institute and has published research and white papers on AI governance in healthcare.
I am grateful to join the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. I’ve drawn on the Council’s reports, frameworks, and ethical guidance throughout my career in responsible AI and data governance. I hope to connect bioethics and AI governance to maintain public trust in healthcare systems, as AI and other technologies transform the biomedical field.”
Margi Sheth
- Constantinos Kanaris is a Paediatric Critical Care Consultant, Medical Examiner and academic clinician with expertise in paediatric resuscitation, patient safety, sepsis and bioethics. He holds a PhD in Bioethics and Medical Jurisprudence and is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Nicosia Medical School and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Resuscitation at Queen Mary University of London. He serves as a Medical Expert to the General Medical Council and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Child Health Care. His international advisory work includes supporting the World Health Organisation on paediatric sepsis, and he has held leadership roles with the Paediatric Critical Care Society.
I am honoured to join the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. My work has focused on promoting ethical, safe and compassionate healthcare, particularly where complex decisions affect critically ill children and their families. I look forward to contributing a clinical, ethical and practical perspective, informed by experience in paediatric critical care, bioethics, medical jurisprudence and patient safety. I am also keen to learn from fellow Council members as we address questions that matter to patients, professionals and society.”
Constantinos Kanaris
Council members are appointed for an initial three-year term and are involved in developing our strategic direction, topic identification and project scoping, reviewing ongoing work, and overseeing our outputs and activities.
