BAPM professional guidelines
The British Association of Perinatal Medicine has published professional guidelines on the management of extremely premature babies.
In its 2006 report, Critical care decisions in fetal and neonatal medicine, the Council recommended that organisations that govern the medical profession and those that advocate for parents should develop guidelines on the treatment and care of extremely premature babies. We set out how we thought this guidance should look, intending this as a basis for discussion by those organisations.
The treatment of premature babies is not set out in UK law and the Council thought that this was right.
The British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) and several other organisations1 took the Council up on its recommendations and worked together to draw up new medical guidance in 2008.
