On 12 June 2012, the Council held a discussion event in Westminster Palace to launch its report, ‘Novel techniques for the prevention of mitochondrial DNA disorders: an ethical review’. Find out more about this report.

Some of the findings of the review received significant media coverage earlier in the day, leading up the event. To open the meeting, Members of the Working Group gave presentations about the background and context to the report, the scientific techniques that were under consideration, the ethical questions that are raised, and the Working Party’s conclusions on some of the ethical questions.

This was followed by a lively discussion and debate with many contributions and questions from the audience. The meeting was Chaired by Baroness Sally Greengross, and more than 80 people attended, including families affected by mitochondrial disorders, scientists working on the prevention techniques, doctors, MPs, representatives of patient groups, social researchers and ethicists.

The PowerPoint slides from the launch are available to download here.
