Neurotechnology in healthcare: Brain-computer interfaces

Examining and advising on the ethics of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and their convergence with AI and quantum computing.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have the potential to facilitate someone’s movement and communication through their ability to measure and then modify a person’s brain activity. We first explored the ethical questions raised by BCIs and related neurotechnologies in our 2013 report.

More than a decade on, advances in AI and quantum computing are reshaping the ethical issues and creating new questions about the use of BCIs beyond healthcare.

This project will review recent developments, drawing on commissioned research and our call for evidence, to reassess the ethical considerations at play and provide updated recommendations for those involved in the development, regulation, use and promotion of BCIs.
